Issue 98: Stotz, Gabriele: Theoretische und ethische Probleme der psychiatrischen Diagnose. March 1995

Concepts of health and disease are influenced by culture and prejudice; this creates specific epistemological and ethical problems in psychiatric diagnosis. The author discusses different clinical approaches in diagnosing patients in psychiatry and understands diagnosis as a process depending on interaction and situation. While psychiatric diagnosis is preconditional for good clinical treatment, medical and political history provide examples of abuse and in hard cases diagnosis has to be made against the will and consent of the patient.
