Issue 122: Schmitz, Dagmar; Bauer, Axel W.: Evolutionäre Ethik und ihre Rolle bei der Begründung einer zukünftigen Medizin- und Bioethik. March 2000

With Charles Darwin's theory of social instincts, an innovative understanding of human moral behaviour has been founded which is characterized by applying evolutionary principles of biology to ethics. Taking up this tradition, today's sociobiology may offer a new metaethical approach even for medical ethics and bioethics by generating a synthesis from behavioural research, ecology, and population genetics. Our paper presents this (meta-)ethics based on evolutionary principles of biology by comparing it with the principle-based ethics of Beauchamp and Childress and by looking critically into its consequences and chances.
