| Issue 105: Richter, Gerd; Schmid, Roland M.: Ethische Perspektiven der Gentherapie 1995. January 1996 | | | ETHICAL ISSUES IN HUMAN GENE THERAPY 1995 As somatic gene therapy seems to become important for a variety of diseases this paper discusses in particular the unique patterns of the mitochondrial genome for therapeutic intervention. Richter und Schmid propose to have a three-diamensional framework for the ethical discussion of gene therapy: (a) somatic cells vs. germline cells, (b) therapy and prevention vs. enhancement, (c) nDNA vs. mtDNA targeting. They discuss somatic cell therapy under deontological, bioethical and pragmatic, and socio-political aspects, and summarize the ethical debate regarding modification in the germline and the mitchondrial genome.
