Issue 145: Hartmann, Fritz: Kranke als Gehilfen ihrer Ärzte. December 2003

In PATIENTS AS HELPERS TO THEIR DOCTORS Fritz Hartmann discusses European traditions in the interaction of healthy people and patients with their physicians from Hippocrates to the times of Enlighment, and to modern and contemporary medicine. He underlines the importance of literate and educated communication and cooperation for both sides. Successful information and advice and compliance with the golden rules of dietetics requires a model of partnership. Hartmann's definition of health is a genuine contribution to the importance of lay health literacy and to a partnership model for patients and physicians in the context of European cultural and professional tradition.
