Issue 163: Sass, Hans-Martin: Abwägungsprinzipien zum Cloning menschlicher Zellen. January 2006

Hans-Martin Sass discusses ethical aspects of cloning and reprogramming of human cells in clinical research. Applying the principalism method in a case, he makes use of well established principles such as Balancing Risk, Solidarity, Respect for Human Dignity, Precision in Argumentation. He also introduces two new principles: the Basket Principle and the Minimax Principle. The Basket principle compares a new case of ethical concern and challenge with other cases in a basket of already accepted or tolerated ethical behavior and judgment. The Minimax principle intends to balance a minimal obstruction of established cultural or ethical traditions and judgments with a maximum of reasonable well-defined options in clinical research and new therapy.
