Issue 83: Ilkilic, Ilhan: Der Bochumer Arbeitsbogen und der türkische Patient. Pratik Tip Etigi Icin Bochum Calisma Tablosu Ve Thrk Hastasi. July 1993

Cartesian concepts and methods have influenced the change of technology and medicine in Europe, also the concept of man. In medicine, maschines and data sometimes have replaced human interaction; invidualism has weakened traditional relations in family and society. The new situation calls for a reaffirmation of the human nature and for the assessment of goals and limits of medical technology in the light of cross-cultural medical principles such as "primum nil nocere", "bonum facere" and confidentialy. The "Bochum Working Paper on the Practice of Medical Ethics" allows jut for that , but needs the addition of the following four questions for a multi-cultural setting: (1) Does, the patient prefer paternalistic treatment, patership or self-determination? (2) Does the patient want to include the spouse or family members in decision making? (4) What can be done to guarantee that every patient is treated according to her or his personal system of belief, which may be Islamic, Christian, or secular?
